Our rating
Pros
  • Made with Australian oats, so it has lower food miles compared to if they were grown overseas and transported
  • Fortified with 120mg calcium per 100mL of milk, so it classifies as an appropriate replacement to cow's milk in terms of calcium (important for bone health)
  • Contains no added sugar
  • Contains added sunflower and canola oil to give it a fatty mouth feel. Both of these oils are high in mono and poly-unsaturated fatty acids, namely linoleic, oleic and alpha-linoleic (an omega 3) fatty acids
  • Low in sodium (salt)
  • Australian owned company, so supports our economy and business owners
  • Vegan-friendly.
Cons
  • Only contains 9% oats, although from what we can find a 10-15% oat content is quite standard for oat milks
  • It's very low in protein (a key nutrient in animal milk or soy milk). Most Australians exceed their protein requirements, so this is ok in the context of eating other protein rich foods. If you're following a vegan diet, try eat whole nuts, seeds, legumes
  • The carton is not recyclable in all councils. Check your local council website before placing this carton in the recycling bin
Summary

Overall, the Dietitians at Eat Sustainably recommend this oat milk. The pros outweigh the cons, but we highly recommend you check to see if the carton can be recycled near you. Considering it only comes in 1 litre cartons (that we could find), that's a lot of plastic lined packaging if a family drinks a lot of this milk.
