Our rating
Pros
  • This supplement is an excellent source of plant-based protein with 37.9g per 100g (or 20.1g per serve)
  • The protein is from organic pea and pumpkin seed protein – these provide the 9 essential amino acids your body cannot make
  • This product is made from plants, reducing the overall environmental impact, compared to animal-based protein supplements
  • Many ingredients are organically grown, which is supportive of soil biodiversity as artificial fertilisers and synthetic chemicals are not used
  • High in dietary fibre with 4.4g per serve. The recommendation is at least 3g per serve. This fibre is from the organic inulin, which acts as a prebiotic for gut bacteria
  • Source of probiotics, which can improve gut microbiome diversity. If you drink this protein supplement, you can save money by not taking a probiotic supplement (if you are)
  • Low in added sugar with just less than one teaspoon per serve
  • An excellent source of iron, zinc, iodine, selenium, vitamin B12 and more. These are especially important for people on a purely plant-based/vegan diet or those with low iron levels
  • The company sources ingredients from ‘trusted producers’. We’re not sure what this means but buying directly from farmers and food producers can support sustainability
  • Despite soft plastic not being routinely recycled in Australia, Nuut provides a pre-paid envelope to ship the packets to New South Wales to be recycled into kids and outdoor furniture. We haven’t come across another company offering this and love it!
  • Soy free, which isn’t a ‘pro’ from a nutrition lens as soy in protective against several cancers, but it is good for people with soy protein allergies
  • This product has no added gluten but is produced in a facility that also processes gluten
  • Nuut provides tubs of 10 servings for people who want to reduce their use of individually packaged foods
  • Vegan and vegetarian friendly
Cons
  • This supplement is high in salt with 880mg sodium per 100g (or 480mg per serve). The recommendation for foods is <400mg sodium per 100g
  • This sodium content would be ok if someone was exercising and sweating heavily and needing electrolyte replacement, but for the general population it is high for one meal replacement
  • Like all supplements, this product is ultra-processed, increasing its overall environmental impact
  • The individual plastic lined sachets are not good for the environment. Plastics can contain plastic chemicals (e.g. BPS, BPA, DEHP), that are known endocrine disruptors
  • The use of the word ‘whole foods’ is slightly misleading given they are in a highly processed form. All foods originate as whole foods in their natural state and progress to ‘processed foods’ as they are ground, dried etc.
  • Made with just over 10% Australian ingredients this supplement is likely to have higher food miles, increasing greenhouse gas emissions linked to transport
Summary

This plant-based supplement is high in dietary fibre, is a source of probiotics, contains a variety of organically grown ingredients and is a good source of iron and other vitamins and minerals. Its drawbacks include the fact it’s ultra-processed (like all supplements), is high in sodium and is packaged in individual plastic sachets. You can keep the overall planetary impact of this supplement lower by mixing it with tap water (best option) or a plant-based milk. We also suggest buying the supplement in the tubs rather than the individual sachets.

More than 90% of Australian’s eat enough protein and do not need to take a protein supplement. However, if you struggle to eat enough protein from food, have increased requirements or are trying to build muscle rapidly, a supplement can be useful and effective. This is one of the better ones we’ve seen.

Nuut provides plans to help people lose weight, should they wish. Despite high protein low carbohydrate meal replacements being effective in weight loss reduction in the short term, there are a few key factors to consider. These include the sustainability of this diet in the long-term, the impact on relationships with food and social interactions (such as eating breakfast with your kids) and the overall environmental impact of this dietary habit. As stated on the packet, these supplements are not a sole source of nutrition and are designed to complement a nutritious diet.
