Supermarkets and food stores can be overwhelming, especially if you're in a rush, they're busy or you have kids with you. The best thing you can do to prepare for these situations and still make healthy and sustainable food choices is by preparing before you leave the house.
Here are eight key questions to ask yourself to help you shop sustainably
- What have you already got at home and need to use?
- What do you plan to eat for the week? Do you have any social occasions to consider? If you need inspiration, check out our meal plans and recipes.
- What fruits and vegetables are in season? If you're not sure, use our Seasonal Eating Guide as a reference.
- Have you written a shopping list? Or the notes section of your phone!
- When did you last eat? Have a filling snack before you go to help you make healthier choices at the shop. A handful of nuts can be the perfect (and car friendly) filling snack.
- What shop you’re going to? Do they have what you need?
- Does the shop I'm going to sell local food?
- Have you packed your reusable bags? Or a container to put meat in at the butcher?
