Yes! Major supermarkets sell a range of products and are often a convenient choice for many time-poor people because you can buy lots of groceries in one place. However, many products sold in major supermarkets are not good for our health or environmental sustainability.

So, the key is to know what you're looking for, then you can choose the groceries that are the best choice for your body and the planet. If you’re unsure about this, you’re in the right place. Eat Sustainably has many tools to help our community learn how to choose foods in supermarkets. But remember, wholefoods (e.g., whole fruit and vegetables, nuts, and seeds) often don’t come in a packet with a Nutrition Information Panel but are most often the best for our bodies.

For information on individual food items, check out our product reviews. To find out which fruits and vegetables are in season in your state or territory, check out our seasonality charts. Check out our label reading guidelines for how to choose a nutritious packaged food product. Another tip to choosing more environmentally sustainable options in the supermarket is by looking to see if the product is made from Australian ingredients (this is different from ‘made in Australia’). Find information here.

Once you know what you're looking for, it's much easier to find your way through major supermarkets to help you on your healthy and eco-friendly food journey.
