food waste throwing food out

Before throwing food in the bin, think of other ways you can dispose of your food more thoughtfully. Here are some tips to help you on your journey to reduce landfill...
  • Composting at home - Food scraps such as fruits, vegetables, eggshells, teabags, and coffee grounds can all be put in a home compost. Combine these with equal parts scrap paper and cardboard and mix with soil. Every time new material is added, turn, or mix to aerate. Discuss with your local council, as some councils provide rebates or discounts for composting equipment

  • Food organics scheme - depending on which council area you live in, you may have access to FOGO (food organics garden organics) or another food composting scheme. This involves separating out your food and organic (garden) waste and placing into the green bin provided by council. This material is taken to a composting centre and avoids going to landfill

  • Worm farms - another great option to stop your food waste going to land fill is to keep your worm farm. This is like composting, in that it can take food scraps such as fruits, vegetables, eggshells, teabags and coffee ground, combined with paper and cardboard. Discuss with your local council, as some councils provide rebates or discounts for worm farm equipment

  • Keeping your own chickens - chooks are a great way of using food scraps and you not only get eggs, but also organic fertiliser for your garden! They're a great pet and educational tool for kids to learn about where our food comes from. Check with your local council about restrictions and whether chickens are allowed.
